Tropical mangrove forests have been destroyed even faster than coral reefs. They are removed for lumber, firewood and to make way for fish ponds or foreshore reclamation. In areas where these were previously found action should be taken to replace them at the same time as undertaking coral restoration, reef restoration and reef rehablitation with artificial coral.
Mangroves and their root structures are vital spawning grounds for many fish species, control run-off and coastal erosion and complement seagrass beds.
When mangrove seeds fall they tend to be eaten by crabs and very few survive.
ArtificialCoral.org supplies the patented Mangrove Planter (designed by Technostrat Corporation) which is installed in the coastal habitat of the mangroves.
The Mangrove Planter is designed to be installed by unskilled workers who assemble and install the device in situ. It consists of a frame structure made from pvc pipes and is pinned down. The Mangrove Planter has planter tubes to protect the seeds which are fed water by abaca rope wicks which also simulate roots for the fish. The top surface is covered by a pvc net which provides shade and protects the seeds from crabs.
A typical installation would be units placed in a line along the shore area to be re-habilitated.

The ex-works 'free in container' price for 1x20' container with 240 pieces of Mangrove Planter is $US 154,810.00 including freight; the unit cost is $US 633.00. This will cover 12,000 square feet of planting area (1,080 square meters) with 6,480 seedlings . This is based on delivery in the ASEAN region, to other destinations freight will be adjusted.
